How Dangerous Are Spiders?

The sight of a spider tends to cause panic among many people and a fight or flight reaction that is, in actuality, well out of bounds for how much of a threat spiders present to us. The reality is our fear reaction is likely more due to the alien, insectile appearance of spiders, and how different they are from us, as mammals than the danger they present.

That’s not to say that spiders can’t be dangerous, but just how much of a risk does a spider present in a normal household setting?

Not That Venomous

The biggest fear that people have of spiders, while legitimate, is rare. Some spiders are venomous, and if they bite humans, the toxins in their venom will have a negative reaction. The scientific fact is that all spiders are venomous. They are predators, and this is how they hunt their prey by injecting a toxin. However, of the 40,000 species of spiders in the world, only a few dozen have venom that is toxic enough to affect humans.

In the United States, there are only two spiders that are cause for any concern, the black widow and the brown recluse spider. Even in these cases, the bites of these spiders are rarely serious enough to cause death. In 2013, there were 1800 reported cases of spider bites by black widows. Over 1000 of these didn’t warrant serious medical treatment, and none of the bites were fatal.

The Average Spider Experience

Spiders are not inherently aggressive to humans. While it’s true that they’re predators, they are only interested in picking on things their own size. Under normal circumstances, this is usually the insects that people don’t like, such as flies and mosquitos.

If you find you have spiders in your home, they are there for a reason. Spiders only go where the food is, which, in their case, is smaller insects. So if you find that you have some spiders in your home, this is a guarantee that insects are also coming, and spiders have taken up residence to feed on them.

When Is It Serious?

So when should you call for the professionals to remove spiders? If you have one that you see in your home, it’s not strictly necessary to call in the experts, though if you don’t feel safe in your home, and don’t feel confident about removing the spider yourself, and don’t trust any friends or neighbors to do it, you may have to call in experts.

However, spider infestations can take place. This is usually under extraordinary circumstances when the insect population on a property is so large, it can actually sustain a spider colony of sorts. If you find yourself in the unusual situation of having a property with many spiders, especially if they are black widows, then this presents a serious threat to the immediate area.
