Am I Dealing With A Rodent Infestation?

Am I Dealing With A Rodent Infestation

The best way to determine if you’re dealing with mouse infestations is to call your local pest control service, but there are signs you can look for as well before the infestation gets out of control. Being diligent in looking after your home or business property is your best defense against the damages that rodents can do when left to their own devices.

Signs Of A Rodent Infestation

There are a number of signs you can look for that point to a potential rodent infestation. Some of these signs include:

  • Droppings – Rodents aren’t litter trained, they’re not going to make sure to eliminate outside, and they’re not going to designate a special hidden area “to go”. This means that they will spread their droppings wherever they go, and this can be one of your first signs that a rodent infestation is present. Both mouse and rat droppings can be found wherever these rodents are hiding out or being active, and they are easy to spot. Mouse droppings will typically be pointed at both ends, and about a quarter-inch long or shorter. Rat droppings will be blunted at both ends and can be longer than half an inch.
  • Urine odor – It’s not just solids that rodents will eliminate wherever they go. Rodent urine has a distinct musky odor that is easy to spot when you know what you’re looking for. If you open up cabinets under the sink, the pantry, closets, or anywhere in the home and you smell a musky odor you’re not familiar with, you could be smelling rodent urine.
  • Keep your ears open – Mice and rats are nocturnal animals, which means they’ll be most active when the house is quiet and everyone is getting ready to fall asleep. If you listen closely and hear squeaking or scratching within the walls, this is a huge sign pointing to a hidden rodent infestation.
